So FAWM has been over for a month in a half, and I haven’t touched this blog. My original idea was to keep it updated as I continued to work on music, whether that is new songs, or editing the old ones. Well, the big sigh of relief after FAWM has turned a bit into a slump of no songwriting for awhile from me.
I’ve attempted going back to a few songs to revisit them, but it soon becomes apparent that, while the initial songwriting can be hard, it is much more difficult to go back and edit, change, and/or rerecord. The initial songwriting “magic” has worn off, and it quickly begins to look and feel like work. And so the temptation is to just try to write a new song at the expense of all the time and work that went into the many others before it. Also, with my “first drafts” of songs, it was more than acceptable to me to be less than perfect. If there was a slight hiccup or mess-up in one of the tracks, I just let it go. But when I go back to work on a song, I feel like it has to be much more polished, and so I may end up needed to rerecord a track multiple times before I can do it error free. And that’s not even mentioning mixing, clarity of the recording, and other factors…
So anyway, I revisited one, with the idea that I would put some midi orchestral strings into it, but it seems like I’m biting off more than I can chew, and I’m stuck at the beginning. Another song I redid with a different style, and I like it, but I recorded it on the 4-track which is very limited in ways that I can go back and edit tracks, so I probably need to rerecord the whole thing in garageband, which is something I just haven’t taken the time to do. And then I have two other songs that I’ve come up with some new lyrics or new melodies for, but again for some reason it is difficult to just get to the recording part, since it seems like I’ve done it all before.
Edit: I started this post last week. Since then I’ve managed to record a new song. Indie-electronica you could call it (with very out-of-tune vocals.) I’ll make some more posts soon concerning gear, my new setup and anything new I’ve put together.
